Gender wage inequality: new evidence from penalized expectile regression

چکیده
Abstract The Machado-Mata decomposition building on quantile regression has been extensively analyzed in the literature focusing gender wage inequality. In this study, we generalize to expectile framework, which, best of our knowledge, never applied strand literature. contrast, recent years, expectiles have gained increasing attention other contexts as an alternative traditional quantiles, providing useful statistical and computational properties. We flexibly deal with high-dimensional problems by employing Least Absolute Shrinkage Selection Operator. empirical analysis focuses pay gap Germany Italy. find that depending estimation approach (i.e. or regression) results substantially differ along some regions distribution, whereas they are similar for others. From a policy perspective, finding is important it affects conclusions about glass ceiling sticky floors.

Inequality-adjusted gender wage differentials in Germany
This paper exploits data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) to re-examine the gender wage gap in Germany on the basis of inequalityadjusted measures of wage differentials which fully account for gender differences in pay distributions. The inequality-adjusted gender pay gap measures are significantly larger than suggested by standard indicators, especially in East Germany. Women appear...

The main purpose of this paper is to examine an impact of globalization on gender wage inequality. Specifically, the hypothesis is that globalization reduces gender wage gap. For this, we have employed a panel technique for 21 selected develo...
متن کاملUpstreamness, Exports, and Wage Inequality: Evidence from Chinese Manufacturing Data
[Abstract] In this paper we investigate within-firm wage inequality across heterogeneous industries that hold different positions in the domestic value chain, and across heterogeneous firms that have different exposure to trade. We find that the wage inequality problem is more severe in upstream industries than in downstream ones, and among firms with greater exposure to trade (i.e., larger exp...
متن کاملStructural change and wage inequality: Evidence from German micro data
This paper measures the impact of sectoral composition, international trade and technological progress on the rising wage gap in Germany. I find a positive effect of the increasing importance of services on the rising wage gap in Germany that is comparable to the effects of international trade and technological change. To quantify the causal relationship between the structural change of the Ger...
